Words from Walton

Over the years, Walton Bernie, founder of The Big Box, has chatted with customers,
the media, and stockholders about different topics. Here are some highlights of his
comments of the past...

 |
Women in the Workplace - "It's great to see the gals working
alongside the men, helping out, dusting the shelves, and working the registers. They
really help with the housekeeping at our stores, and many of them move up the corporate
ladder as quickly as we allow." |
| Products Made Overseas - "It's an economic reality that we
must import many items to sell in our stores. However, whenever possible, we continue to
hire residents of the United States to actually work in our stores. We will continue to
hire US residents unless flying employees in from another country proves economically
feasible." |

Local Merchants - "Local merchants can continue to thrive even
after a Big Box store opens in their community. Many merchants have succeeded by finding a
niche market to focus on, rather than try to compete head-on with our store. Several have
been successful selling pencils or apples on the sidewalks near our stores." |
| Zoning Regulations - "Many times, our store plans do not meet
local zoning regulations, and this allows rabble-rousers to protest the building of a new
Big Box. However, these zoning ordinances are usually old laws designed for simpler times.
They were intended to keep the community quiet, traffic-free, and unique. Once we show the
local government officials how much sales tax revenue our store will generate, and how
many tax dollars our store will suck from surrounding communities, they are more than
willing to bend over to accommodate our zoning change requests." |
